The Benefits of Live Plants in Arid or Desert Environments

The Arid or Desert environment is most commonly associated with intense heat during the day and cold nights, which is the case with many of the world’s deserts.

With extreme temperate conditions, it’s a wonder that so many animals and plant species not only survive but thrive in these conditions.

What are the benefits of using live plants in your Arid or Desert enclosure?

Plants take sunlight, water, and Carbon Dioxide via the process of photosynthesis which releases Oxygen and moisture improving the overall enclosure air quality.

If planted directly into an appropriate substrate or soil, the plant roots will spread and take in vital moisture and nutrients. This process will aid keeping the substrate or soil healthy by aerating it.

Some live plants, like the ones from our collection, are edible and filled with nutrients, making them a perfect choice to use for grazing species such as Bearded Dragons or Mediterranean Tortoises.

Live plants will also provide shade and cover for animals where they can rest.

Caring for our HabiStat Live Plant Desert Mix

  • Lightly spray the plants as well as the substrate surrounding them a few times a week (this will vary depending on species enclosure conditions).
  • Use the Arcadia JungleDawn LED Bar to provide essential lighting for healthy development.
  • Do not place these desert plants directly under or on top of a heat source.
